Former El Paso County Prosecutor – Insight From Both Sides
Before opening his defense practice, Joe served for five years as a prosecutor in El Paso County, Colorado. He worked as a front-line supervisor for Deputy District Attorneys prosecuting DUI cases and served on the Vehicular Homicide team.
This background gives Joe the ability to analyze a DUI case the way a prosecutor will—and then systematically dismantle the State’s theory from the defense side. Over the course of his career, he has tried 78 jury trials as both a deputy district attorney and private defense counsel.
Specialized Training in DUI Science & Field Sobriety Testing
Joe has intentionally built a rare combination of trial skill and DUI-specific scientific training that few DUI lawyers in Colorado possess:
- ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer-Scientist
Joe has earned the prestigious ACS Forensic Lawyer-Scientist Designation, as recognized by the Chemistry and the Law Division of the American Chemical Society. He is one of only four attorneys in Colorado to hold this designation.
This training focuses on the science behind blood and breath testing, including gas chromatography, and equips Joe to challenge the reliability of the State’s blood toxicology results in DUI cases. Joe has successfully completed the same SFST and Detection course that DUI officers must complete. - SFST Instructor-Level Training
He has also completed the SFST Instructor Development course, equivalent to the training the most experienced DUI officers receive to teach others. - Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE)
Joe has completed the ARIDE course, which advanced DUI officers use to identify and investigate drug-related and combined impairment cases.
This combination of scientific training and real courtroom experience allows Joe to identify weaknesses in DUI investigations, attack faulty assumptions, and present clear, credible challenges to police and lab testimony.

Military Leadership, Service, and Constitutional Values
Long before he earned the title “Attorney,” Joe earned the title United States Marine Corps Infantry Officer. He attained the rank of Captain, commanding two platoons and a company of Marines during three deployments to Iraq. He earned the title Marine Corps Summer Mountain Leader and was named the Tactics Award Winner at Light Armored Reconnaissance Leaders Course. Following his company command tour, he received the Marine Corps Association’s Chambers Award for Leadership.
Joe also served on the staff of U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel as a deputy legislative assistant for military and veterans’ issues, giving him a valuable perspective on how laws and policies are made—and how they impact individual citizens.
His experience as a trial attorney, military officer, legislative staff member, and combat veteran has forged an unapologetic and unwavering respect for the U.S. Constitution and the rights it guarantees. Joe believes those rights must be defended at the level of the individual client in every DUI and criminal case.
Life Outside the Courtroom
Joe is grateful to God for his wife and four sons. He is an avid runner, sportsman, and outdoor enthusiast. He brings the same discipline and resilience from his military and athletic background to the way he prepares and tries his cases.
