In December 2018, Joe Maher completed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 24-hour Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and DUI detection course in Atlanta, Georgia. This course is the same course that DUI officers are put through to train them in administering and interpreting results of the scientifically validated field sobriety tests that drivers are put through to determine if they are driving under the influence of alcohol. The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) are comprised of three tests: Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and the One-Leg Stand. The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests are the best tool law enforcement has to establish probable cause to make a DUI or DWAI arrest. But officers must administer and score these tests in the standardized manner in which the tests are to be administered and scored if the tests are to yield accurate results based on the studies that validated the SFSTs. Mr. Maher passed rigorous practical and written testing to successfully complete this SFST course and can closely analyze a case to determine if law enforcement followed the numerous proper standardized procedures required to administer these tests. When seeking a DUI attorney it is important to determine if the attorney has passed NHTSA’s Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course to administer and interpret SFSTs as DUI officers do.
